Born in the space of just 50 years at the end of the 18th century, the canal age transformed the British landscape. Thronged with boats transporting raw materials and manufactured goods between factories and cities, the canals were among the most vital arteries of the industrial revolution. Today, however, mellowed by time and issues, these waterways meander slowly through fields carrying boatloads of holidaymakers, or lie disused and forgotten, tucked away in some overgrown and mysterious corner of the countryside.

Yet in 1760, with the construction of the first canal – the Bridgewater – waterways and their potential were very much in the limelight, as was the vibrant new way of life they created. Colourfully decorated with traditional canals and flowers, the narrow boat was home to generations of boat people, and the series of dramatic aqueducts, lock keepers cottages, wharves and bridges still dotting the countryside are our legacy from that era.
Following the course of existing canals, Martin Marix Evans and Robert Reichenfeld toured England and documented these waterways from all aspects – and in all weathers. With over 130 photographs, and a rich and a text rich in history, people and legends, Canals of England captures the beauty of England’s canals from the exquisite detail of a stone gargoyle on a crumbling Bath bridge to the magnificent sweep of the Rochdale Canal as it cuts through the Yorkshire countryside.
Martin Marix Evans is a writer and publisher who is particularly fascinated by history. His previous publications include guides to the battlefields of Ypres, the Somme and Normandy, and a companion for visitors to the Paris Riverside. He lives in Northamptonshire close to the Grand Junction canal on one side and the Oxford canal on the other.
Robert Reichenfeld is a location photographer, born in England of Icelandic and Austrian parents. He grew up in Canada and loves the outdoors, spending as much time as possible skiing, windsurfing and mountain biking. In addition to books, he also takes many photographs for advertising.
