Waterways Journal is an annual publication, originally published by The Boat Museum Society. This is the first edition of that annual publication published in 1999 and contains four detailed articles covering the history of parts of Britain’s inland waterway system.  The 72-page publication is well illustrated with archive photographs the occasional map and many diagrams.  There is a wealth of information here not found elsewhere.

British Canal History in Perspective.  Mike Clarke reviews British canal history within the context of developments in continental Europe.

Steam and Diesel on the Bridgewater Canal.  Alf Heyman chronicles the use of steam and diesel propulsion in the craft of the Duke of Bridgewater and his successors on the Bridgewater Canal.

Cruising the Llangollen and Shrewsbury canals in 1939.  Captain T Wheeldon records a journey along these canals just prior to World War Two. With the advent of war came the official closure of the Shrewsbury Canal. Outside the use of maintenance boats, this voyage may have been one of the last attempts to reach Shrewsbury by boat.

The canals of England and Wales the Future they never had.  Tony Burnip reviews the decline of the waterways of England and Wales and looks at the plans that were made, but never carried out, to combat the competition of railways and later road transport.
