This is a history of the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal and the River Tone Navigation.

Over 200 years ago, when canal building in Britain was in its infancy, men of vision dreamt of cutting a waterway between the Bristol and English channels, as a means of avoiding the long and hazardous sea journey around the South West peninsula.

It was not until 1827 that the portion linking Bridgewater to Taunton was opened to traffic. It thrived initially, but by the time of the First World War the canal lay idle and abandoned. By Waterway to Taunton relates the history of the canal and its recent restoration to navigation.  But it is more than that, for it includes the equally fascinating history of the other waterway that served Taunton before the canal was cut – the river Tone.

Deriving its material from numerous sources, By Waterway to Taunton is an important addition to the canal literature and a fascinating record of those who lived and worked on the waterway.
