The fascinating history of the flats that at one time traded in their hundreds around the Mersey.

At one time, flats were to be seen trading in their hundreds on the Mersey river, the adjacent coastline and the connecting canals and other inland waterways which linked Liverpool with Manchester and embraced the whole surrounding area, with links to the whole national waterways system.
The flats were the principal carriers, under sail alone for generations, until supplemented and eventually taken over by steam power and finally the diesel engine. Over the same period, first the railway, and finally the motor lorry took, over most of their carrying trade, until now, alas, all these interesting and historic vessels are gone.
Michael Stammers was well known in wider fields, but especially in the North West as the keeper of the Merseyside Maritime Museum in the Albert Dock. He carried out detailed research, and this book presents in full detail the history of these fascinating local craft with numerous personal interviews, a fine collection of photographs and detailed drawings by Edward Paget-Tomlinson.
