Northamptonshire is one of the least known inland counties of England, yet it is intersected by various surface transport modes of national importance. Historically, these routes range from prehistoric and Roman roads to motorways. This book looks at those transport links of the industrial revolution, the waterways, which have fulfilled, and continue to fulfil, a vital but changing role in the county’s economy for two centuries, and are now entering upon a third such century.

The book looks at the river Nene, a fascinating and little known river navigation, at the Oxford canal with its early narrow sections and its updated bypass cuts, at the Grand Junction Canal, that splendid monument to Georgian state-of-the-art technology, and at the impact these waterways had on their surroundings.
Other sections deal with what there is to see today for the modest explorer and navigator, and demonstrates how easily the past sits beside the present and indeed the future in Northamptonshire. Finally, there are appendices dealing with various human and technical aspects of the waterways.
The book contains many hitherto unpublished illustrations and should appeal to transport enthusiasts, boaters, walkers, photographers, historians geographers, naturalists, and all those who love and respect the landscape and countryside of England.
