Green was to design and construct canal systems at Bude in Cornwall, at Torrington and the Great Western Canal in Somerset, and at Kidwelly and Llanelly in Wales.  He was also engineer at the commencement of the Chard Canal in Somerset and constructed the extension to the Exeter Ship Canal. As a highway engineer he undertook major road building projects which today remain part of Devon’s highway network.  On leaving Devon, in 1841, he completed the new dock for Newport in Wales. His architectural works include Saint David’s church and Elmfield house in Exeter, and Buckland House, near  Buckland Filleigh in Devon.

The author, Brian George, is a former chief bridge engineer for Devon, responsible for the overall supervision of the design and construction of over 100 bridges for trunk and county roads during his 28 years with the authority. For 10 years he was a member of Lord Chancellor’s independent panel of inspectors for public inquiries into highway proposals in England and Wales. From 1979 he was been a member for Devon and Cornwall of the Panel For Historical Engineering Works of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
