Francis Frith was a pioneer Victorian photographer and businessman. In the 1850s he explored the exciting possibilities of the new photographs, travelling to the desert regions of the Nile with his camera. The remarkable photographs of the antiquities and the magic peoples he brought back firmly established his reputation. He went on to devote the remainder of his life to photographing the towns and villages of Great Britain. His aim was to make his pictures easily available to ordinary Victorian working people, who were beginning to enjoy day trips and holidays. His company dominated the development of the photo souvenir and later the postcard. By the time of his death in 1898, he had created the largest specialist photographic publishing company in the world. The Frith archive is the remarkable legacy of its energetic and visionary founder. Frith’s sons carried on the business after his death adding to the company’s catalogue of photographs. Today the Frith archive is the only nationally important archive of its kind still in private ownership. It is renowned for its geographical breadth and for the high quality of its images.
