Fenland waterways is the second collaboration in book form between Alan Roulstone and his son Michael Roulstone. Like its predecessor, Taverns in Town, the book combines illustration with text to form what its compilers aptly define as ‘an anthology’ – a personal survey of some of the many pleasurable and interesting features to be found in the fascinating area. The 36 delightful watercolour illustrations and the discursive text blend here in a manner that invites the tourist, whether by road or by water, to examine a picturesque area that is rapidly developing into one of the country’s major centres of inland navigation.

The book traces the course of the navigable waterways to discovered in Fenland, initially beginning at Bedford, the Great Ouse is followed downstream as far as The Wash, and then the Witham is pursued upstream as far as Lincoln. After that, the imaginary navigator is made to return down the Witham to The Wash and explore, in turn, the Welland and the Nene, finally retracing his course to The Wash along the Old Nene. Certain other navigable Fenland waterways are also explored in the course of the narrative, thereby allowing a wide-ranging consideration of the places of interest to be found beside these rivers, whether natural or man-made.
Author and illustrator, both of them one time residents in the northern part of this area, and wholly appreciative of the character of Fenland would like to take this opportunity to commend this part of England to those who are, as yet, unacquainted with it. The publication is not intended exclusively for the waterborne holiday maker, rather it is designed to prove of equal interest to the motorist or anybody else who has derived pleasure from a visit to the Fens, and his hoped the book will be thought a worthy souvenir of time past pleasantly in this part of the country.
