This is a pictorial study of the evolution of river and canal craft in the British Isles, arranged in ‘families’, the treatment of which is more or less geographical. ‘Families’ of craft are logical; for example, the waterways centred on the Thames employed craft of similar design and construction, keels were predominant tin Yorkshire, and so on.
Narrow boats proliferated across the canal network, centred in the Midlands. The ‘families’ are categorised as follows: The Thames, Severn, Narrow Boats, East Anglia, Yorkshire, Leeds & Liverpool Canal, North Western, Scotland, Ireland, Tugs, Boats in Trains, Passenger Packets, Ferries and Maintenance Craft.
Each ‘family’ of boats has its own chapter, all illustrated with over 180 archive photographs and a selection of detailed line drawings, specially prepared for the book.
