Millions of people make use of Britain’s inland waterways every year, yet only a couple of generations ago their thousands of miles were in such a state of neglect and decay that they were threatened with extinction. Race Against Time is the story of Britain’s most successful environmental campaign to date.

The campaign was masterminded by Robert Aickman, a writer of ghost stories and a mana of deep and complex emotions. With Tom Rolt, author of the best-selling Narrow Boat, he founded the Inland Waterways Association, which began in the 1950s to campaign against the destructions of Britain’s canals. Over twenty years, the campaign attracted the support of many people, including John Betjeman, Dame Margot Fonteyn, Peter Scott and A.P. Herbert, and the issue was hotly debated at Westminster.
Victory was sighted when, with the aid of The National Trust, the southern Stratford Canal was reopened in 1964. This paved the way for a new evaluation of the outstanding natural beauty of the waterways. This vital part of the environment now enjoyed by so many was saved by the dedication of a small band of enthusiasts who fought long and hard to alert an indifferent public and challenge an unseeing bureaucracy. The story of this battle provided an inspiring message of hope for the 1990s.
