This is the 6th edition (1985) of the standard directory to the waterways of England, Wales and Scotland, which was first published in 1939 when the fortunes of the navigable rivers and canals were at a low ebb; many lying derelict or disused, some carrying the traditional commercial traffic, but few were prospering.

Forty six years on, the world of waterways was quite different; the canals were well used by pleasure craft, derelict navigations were being restored and there was considerable waterway industry that was never envisaged by the designers and engineers of the 18th and 19th century.

Inland Waterways of Great Britain has kept pace with developments. Based on the famous Bradshaw directories, it is the only comprehensive compendium of dimensions, distances and history for each navigable river and canal.  This edition was revised to include details of newly opened waterways and those undergoing restoration, it was improved by the addition of small scale sketch maps of each waterway and numerous photographs from the author’s collection which had not previously been published.

This guide was therefore an essential handbook for the serious enthusiast, researchers, regular navigators or indeed anyone connected with the waterways. This 6th edition includes much detail and information that was omitted from future editions and so remains an invaluable reference source.

L. A. (Teddy) Edwards was well known not just as the author of four editions of this book, but also as a veteran of the campaign to save and improve the navigable waterways of Britain.  He joined IWA as member number 14 soon after its foundation; he followed Tom Rolt as its secretary in 1950 and in 1958 became honorary consultant, a post he held until he died.  Teddy Edwards was advisor and consultant for numerous waterways bodies and was the honorary secretary for 30 years to the East Anglian Waterways Association.
