The Railways Of Northamptonshire is a scare out-of-print book by well-know waterways author David Blagrove.
The story details the way in which modern Northamptonshire was shaped by the Victorian transport system; how the railways rose to the challenges of road competition and war in the twentieth century; how the tragic demise of so many rural routes came about during the 1950s and 60s; how the modern slimmed down system still serves its communities.
The devotion and service of railway personnel, from the heroic days of Robert Stephenson and Isambard Kingdom Brunel and their navvy gangs, through the great competitive racing of the 1890s and the two world wars, runs as a theme through the book, which is lavishly illustrated with many previously unpublished views and scenes.  We meet the characters who made the system operate, from great Victorian managers and entrepreneurs to the footplatemen and porters who carried out their orders.  There are stories of high farce and deep tragedy, from the seizure of a locomotive for debt by a hire-purchase firm to the grim of scenes at the rare serious accidents in the county.
