Free professional advice

IWA committees, other parts of the Association and waterway charities often require legal advice on waterway matters.  IWA has appointed Nicholas Iles, a practicing solicitor who has worked for top London law firms, as an IWA Honorary Legal Advisor.  Nicholas has particular expertise in corporate crime, investigations by domestic and foreign authorities, compliance and full experience of High Court litigation and arbitration processes, but is also grounded with ten years in the public sector whilst living in Oxford, part of the time on a boat on the Oxford Canal.

IWA Honorary Legal Advisor can provide initial advice to assist organisations to identify the scope of an issue to be examined and to obtain a suitable source of detailed legal advice, or he may be able to assist in routine matters, such as property conveyancing, drawing up licences and leases or an organisation’s legal structure.  Other areas where advice can be sought could include interpretation of legislation, wills and legacies, legal disputes, buying, owning, selling of boats, data protection, safeguarding and matters concerning employment, including volunteers.  In some cases Nicholas Iles may be able to assist direct, or in other cases he should be able to point you in the right direction and advise where paid professional advice is needed.

Nicholas Iles can be contacted through IWA’s Chesham office.
