IWA Chester & Merseyside Walk
Back

Easy Countryside and Waterway Guided Walk ~ In Cheshire and Free.

This free guided walk is open to the general public, and suitable for beginners.   If you’re keeping fit and well and wish to come along and join us, we would love to see more guest visitors.   Please book your place for the walk as soon as you are confident you will be available.

This 5 mile circular walk starts with the main feature – the delightful Trent & Mersey canal towpath, of particular interest for waterway enthusiasts as there are three marinas to pass.  It’s a very pleasant scenic path with a great variety of very attractive rural scenery to admire.  The trees, bushes and wildlife such as herons, will be reflected on the water, and possibly an occasional cruising boat.  On the return route walk we will be following part of the Dane Valley Way long-distance path. This will give panoramic views across the countryside, and the only two stiles on this walk – to climb over.  We finish with a bit of a pavement bash!

There will be a ten-minute break about half-way round the walk for ‘bring your own’ refreshments.

Details

The length of this walk.....

.......is only 4½ miles, and at a leisurely pace, so we won’t walk too fast for you.

This walk is suitable for all adults having good mobility.   Excellent for friendly dogs, but hopeless for wheelchairs.   Suitable footwear will be anything stout and flat soled; trainers will be fine but boots will be the best.  If it has recently been raining heavily there could be a few occasional muddy patches.  The pub toilets will be available at the finish of the walk; and hopefully at the start.

Assemble at 10.15 am for a 10.30 start.    Finish about 1.30 pm.

Booking your place

To book, you will need to text: – ‘I would like to join the November walk’ to the walk’s organiser & guide: – Derek Smith – 07500 300 347.  I will then phone you back for your details; and at the same time, if you wish to book a place for the pub lunch afterwards please ask and I’ll need to know your choice of meal or snack.   Places at the pub are limited so it’s best to make an early booking.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
