Afternoon activities:

Derby & Sandiacre Canal Trust – Canal Cottages Visit

The Derby & Sandiacre Canal Trust invites visitors to the restored Canal Cottages at Draycott, about 10km from the university venue. Once a late-18th century mill and workers’ cottages, the buildings were transformed over four years, using reclaimed materials and extensive volunteer effort, into three rental cottages, a café, meeting rooms, and a small museum celebrating the Derby Canal. Visitors will hear about the restoration challenges, enjoy a short guided walk along the canal line, and discover plans for flood management and water transfer – an engaging insight into heritage brought back to life.

Good footwear is essential.

Location: Hopwell Road, Draycott DE72 3PE

Directions: Please use the postcode in your satnav for directions. Approx. 20-25 mins by car from Jubilee Conference Centre, Nottingham.

Parking: Reasonable parking is available on site and in the immediate vicinity.

Friends of the Cromford Canal – Beggarlee Extension Visit
FCC’S Strategic Restoration Project – Headwall & Flood Channel extension 2023/24

The Friends of the Cromford Canal invite attendees to explore the progress made on the “Beggarlee extension”. The project will restore 1km of canal on a new route past a blockage in the historic line caused by the construction of the A610 Langley Mill bypass road. This will enable the 1974 restored section to rejoin the original line northwards along the scenic Erewash Valley. It will also fill a missing link in the Erewash Trail walking and cycling route. The initial activity will be the construction of a flood compensation zone, which will then enable the first length of the canal to be restored across part of the River Erewash floodplain, before rising through two locks taking it onto higher ground.

FCC will also share stories of the charity, its volunteers, and the Cromford Canal history.

Upon arrival a guided walk will be offered to IWA attendees, where FCC volunteers will take small groups a short trip (15 minutes on the towpath) from the Great Northern Basin starting at Lock 14 which is on the Cromford Canal and up through to the construction site.

Good footwear is essential due to a rough stone path; prior arrangements will need to be made for any visitors with accessibility requirements who can go to the top end by car.

Location: Adjacent to the New Horizon Church, 1 Linkmel Road, Langley Mill. NG16 3RZ

Directions: Please use the postcode above in your satnav for directions. Approx. 20–25 mins by car from Jubilee Conference Centre, Nottingham.

Parking: Parking is adjacent to the Great Northern Pub on Linkmel Road trading estate, also in front of Travis Perkins which shuts at 12:00 noon on Saturdays.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
