IWA Gloucestershire & Herefordshire Branch

About the branch

After being dormant for several years, the branch was relaunched with an AGM held at the Lockkeepers at Over (at the junction of the Herefordshire and Gloucestershire canal and the River Severn) in November 2023. The branch has over 200 members, who were consulted on a range of topics including face-to-face meetings and restoration projects.

The branch helped host the Big Ships festival in Gloucester Docks in May 2024 and manned IWA’s stand at the event.

A further AGM was held in November 2024 followed by a walk & talk on the restoration of the Over lock as well as an opportunity to walk the towpath from the Over basin (restored in 2000) along the restored canal to its current terminus at Vineyard Hill – see pictures [by Paul Thomas] below.

Branch members continue to support the active restoration projects in the area including the Stroudwater Navigation and Herefordshire & Gloucestershire Canal as well as monitoring developments which might impact navigation on the existing navigable waterways – the River Severn and the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal.

New or existing IWA members who would like to get involved in any of the projects in the area are encouraged to get in touch with Roger Morgan, branch chair.
