Steamship Danny to be the exhibition venue on the River Weaver
Back

IWA Chester and Merseyside Branch has agreed with the team at the heritage steamship Danny for the vessel to host a re-run of the successful Restoration Showcase promoting canal and navigable river projects.  This decision came about after the public gave great support to a similar event held in Canning Dock, Liverpool, in 2019.

The event is to take place on the weekend of 29th and 30th July, during school holidays, when the ship is berthed static at its Sutton Weaver Wharf.  The organisers hope that the exhibition , which will be free admission, will attract waterway enthusiasts, the general public and families to see the work of voluntary organisations across the North West and Wales bringing life back to long abandoned waterways.

Launched in 1903, the Danny is registered on the National Historic Ships register alongside the Cutty Sark and will be open to the public to enjoy its art deco lounges with hot-drinks, snacks and alcoholic beverages being served from the galley. There will be adequate out door space for families to picnic.

The 2019 event attracted more than 500 visitors despite atrocious weather and had 12 organisations displaying, whilst a covid cancelled event planned for 2021 had 15 organisations accepting invitations. The UK has over 2,000miles of navigable waterways and restoration societies are committed across the country to expanding the network bringing many miles of neglected and abandoned waterways back to navigable standards”

Jim Forkin (IWA Chairman, Chester and Merseyside ) said “The navigable waterways in the UK contribute some £2.5billion to the economy whilst providing a “green “ corridor free for people to enjoy and that figure can grow further if the system is fully restored to its previous glory. The work of these societies and their volunteers needs to be brought to the attention of the public and decision makers in society”

Les Green (volunteer for the Danny) said “The Danny team were delighted when the showcase idea was put to us both to support these wonderful societies and for the Danny as a small exhibition space being able to fulfil its potential as a multi functional asset for the local populations.”

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
