This August Bank Holiday,  join IWA and the wider boating community for a weekend gathering at Agden Bridge, united in support of restoring full navigation to the Bridgewater Canal.

Following the recent breach earlier this year, this waterway which is part of a vital north–south route, faces a critical moment. While not caused by poor maintenance, the incident is a reminder of the growing threat that extreme weather poses to our waterways.

This is more than a local inconvenience. If a road or rail link of national significance were to fail, rapid restoration would be a given. We believe our inland waterways deserve the same urgency, visibility, and commitment.

Why It Matters

  • A Turning Point for the Bridgewater Canal
The breach highlights the fragility of even well-managed waterways in the face of climate pressures.
  • Opportunity to Engage
As the private owner of this historic canal, the Bridgewater Canal Company now has the chance to engage with the community, share their plans for restoration, and demonstrate transparent leadership.
  • A National Waterways Issue
This disruption impacts navigation across the western side of the country, affecting livelihoods, tourism, and heritage. The response must reflect that scale.
  • Community in Action
This gathering is a proud show of unity. Boaters, anglers, families, local businesses, and supporters will come together to champion a cause that has an impact on all of the network.

What to Expect

  • Live music, great food, a real ale bar, and family-friendly fun
  • A vibrant, visible show of support for resilient, connected waterways.
  • Opportunities for direct dialogue with the Bridgewater Canal Company

Support the waterways

Our volunteers organise events like this to promote the waterways, encourage funding from national, regional and local resources, and to provide free activities and memorable experiences on the water and beside it. Please consider donating to support the waterways.

Events

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
