Easy Countryside and Waterway Guided Walk ~ In Cheshire and Free.

This free guided walk is open to the general public, and suitable for beginners.   If you’re keeping fit and well and wish to come along and join us, we would love to see more guest visitors.   Please book your place for the walk, and perhaps for lunch, as soon as you are confident you will be available.

This circular walk will take you along excellent paths all the way, starting along the bank of the Manchester ship canal then along other tracks and footpaths to the return route.   This is along the Bridgewater Canal towpath and is known as The Cheshire Ring Canal Walk.  It is followed by a footpath back to the pub across a playing field which has a children’s playground nearby.   There is very little road to walk along and very little housing to pass.   There are no fields to cross which contain animals, and most of the paths are enclosed.   There are no stiles to climb, only one fence to step over, and no other obstacles.   Although the route is mostly quite flat the scenery is very pleasant and rural, and even the Thelwall Viaduct is not as intrusive as you might expect.

There will be a ten-minute break about half-way round the walk for ‘bring your own’ refreshments and this walk will finish with an optional pub lunch.

[The photo shows the famous Thelwall Viaduct over the ship canal, instead of driving over it, you’ll be walking under it on this walk.]

Details

The length of this walk.....

.....is only 4 miles, and we won't walk too fast for you.

This walk is suitable for all adults having good mobility.   Excellent for friendly dogs, but hopeless for wheelchairs.   Suitable footwear will be anything stout and flat soled; trainers will be fine but boots will be the best.  If it has recently been raining heavily there could be a few occasional muddy patches.  The pub toilets will be available at the finish of the walk; and hopefully at the start.

Assemble at 10.15 am for a 10.30 start.    Finish about 1.30 pm.

Booking your place

To book, send an email to the walk’s organiser & guide – [email protected]

If you are bringing a partner please let me know both your names.   You can order your optional lunch or snack at our group table at the same time as you book your place on the walk.   Make your choices from the menu link below.   Let me know what you want to order as soon as possible please.   Due to the size of our group the pub needs provisional orders in advance.   Pay for your meal at the pub on the day.

Here you can see the Sunday lunch menu: –  View the Menu    Then scroll down and select the ‘Sunday Menu’ box, for the Sunday Roasts, then the ‘Mains’ box for the other dishes.  The prices are not shown.

On the Thursday before the walk, everyone who has booked in will be sent a reminder, and also the details of where to park your car or moor your boat.

The deadline for booking a place just for the walk is Saturday 4th May at 9.00 pm. – the night before the walk.

A booking confirmation will be emailed to you.

Future Walks

FUTURE BRANCH WALKS: – Entries for your diary; this is the last walk of this season.   Branch walks for next season will start on 29th September and advertised here in the middle of August.

NEW ROUTE SURVEYS: – Derek Smith, who organises these walks for the branch, frequently goes out to survey and record routes for new walks, currently between 5 and 10 miles from Chester.   They normally take place mornings midweek, and he does love a bit of company.   He has a short list of often-available members, and if anyone is interested in joining him, please get in touch ([email protected]).

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
