Easy Countryside and Waterway Guided Walk ~ In Cheshire and Free.

This free guided walk is open to the general public, and suitable for beginners.   If you’re keeping fit and well and wish to come along and join us, we would love to see more guest visitors.   Please book your place for the walk, and perhaps for lunch, as soon as you are confident you will be available.

All of the paths on this circular walk are excellent as this is partly also a town walk.   There are two canals and both are delightful green urban corridors as you can see from the photo.   There are the several short streets to walk along, and the return part will bring you along the line of the old Runcorn locks.   This walk is certainly somewhat different from any usual choice of route as Runcorn is not considered to be an attractive place.    There are few fields on this walk, no cows, no horses – not even a kissing gate.   But this is not a walk to be avoided and is is good for dogs, but they will be on the lead for much of the time.   Okay for wheelchairs & buggies but you’ll need a helper to manage the curbs and a bumpy footpath.   Suitable footwear will be anything flat soled.    The chairman of the Restoration Trust is Graham Wallace, and he will meet us near the remains of the old bottom lock to escort us along the route and update us on the current situation.

THE VIDEO: –  It’s suggested that you view the comprehensive and amusing 20-minute YouTube video about the restoration of the Runcorn locks before you do this walk.   You can find it here: – VIEW the VIDEO

There will be a ten-minute break about half-way round the walk for ‘bring your own’ refreshments and this walk will finish with an optional pub lunch.

Details

The length of this walk.....

.....is only 3¾ miles, and we won't walk too fast for you.

This walk is suitable for all adults having good mobility.   Excellent for friendly dogs, and okay for wheelchairs & buggies but you’ll need a helper to manage the curbs and a bumpy footpath.   Suitable footwear will be anything flat soled; trainers will be fine.  If it has recently been raining heavily there could be puddles and a few occasional muddy patches.  The pub toilets will be available at the finish of the walk; and hopefully at the start.

Assemble at 10.15 am for a 10.30 start.    Finish about 1.30 pm.

Booking your place

To book, send an email to the walk’s organiser & guide – [email protected]

If you’re bringing a partner please let me know both your names, and if you wish to book a place for the pub lunch afterwards please send your order to me at the same time.  Pay for your meal at the bar before you leave the pub.   Places at the pub are limited so it’s best to make an early booking.   Working men frequent the pub so expect a bit of bad language.   Here you can download the Pizza menu: –  View the Menu

On the Thursday before the walk, everyone who has booked in will be sent a reminder, and also the details of where to park your car or moor your boat.

The deadline for booking a place just for the walk is Saturday 16th November at 9.00 pm. – the night before the walk.

A booking confirmation will be emailed to you.

Assemble at 10.15 am for a 10.30 start.    Finish about 1.30 pm

Future Walks

FUTURE BRANCH WALKS: – Entries for your diary; the Christmas walk will be on 15th December; and the New Year walk will be on 12th January 2025.

NEW ROUTE SURVEYS: – Derek Smith, who organises these walks for the branch, frequently goes out to survey and record routes for new walks, currently between 5 and 10 miles from Chester.   They normally take place mornings midweek, and he does love a bit of company.   He has a short list of often-available members, and if anyone is interested in joining him, please get in touch ([email protected]).

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
