Easy Countryside and Waterway Guided Walk ~ In Cheshire and Free.

This free guided waterway walk is suitable for beginners, so if you’re keeping fit and well wish to come along and join us, we would love to see more guest visitors.   Please book your place for the walk, and perhaps for lunch, as soon as you are confident you will be available.

This is a circular walk from Northwich is about 3¾ miles long and along well used footpaths all the way.  This is a very easy circular walk, along River Weaver bank footpaths in Northwich which are in excellent condition and frequently used.   For most of the route they are hard surfaced, but in places compacted turf; and there are no stiles.   After very wet weather there may be surface mud and puddles on the outwards path.

We will pass close to a lock and may see a boat navigating through it.   Also, there are wooded areas such as the Marshall’s Arm Nature Reserve and from it we will see the boats moored at the end of Jalsea boatyard.   We will then walk through Greenbank Wood to the long bankside turf path.  Having crossed the Hartford blue bridge we then return along the old towpath back to the start.

There will be a ten-minute break half-way round the walk for ‘bring your own’ refreshments and this walk along the banks of the river Weaver will finish with an optional pub lunch.

Details

The length of this walk.....

.....is only 3¾ miles miles, and we won't walk too fast for you.

The walk is suitable for older teenagers, senior citizens and anyone in-between; and ideal for dogs.   Suitable footwear will be anything flat soled and stout.   The only toilets are to be found in the pub at the finish of the walk, and hopefully at the start.

Assemble at 10.15 am for a 10.30 start.    Finish about 1.15 pm.

Booking your place

To book, send an email to the walk’s organiser & guide: –  [email protected]

If bringing a partner, please give both your names, and if you wish to book a place for the pub lunch afterwards please ask.  Places are limited so it’s best to make an early booking.   There is no online menu.

On the Thursday before the walk, everyone who has booked in will be sent a reminder, and also the details of where to park.   (Not Dock Road.)   Thursday noon is also the target for booking a place for a meal.

The deadline for booking a place just for the walk is Saturday 11th March – the night before the walk.

A booking confirmation will be emailed to you.

Future Walks

FOR YOUR DIARY: –  The next branch walk this year will be held on 16th April; and the last walk of the season will be on 7th May.

NEW ROUTE SURVEYS: – Derek Smith, who organises these walks for the branch, frequently goes out to survey and record routes for new walks, currently between 5 and 10 miles from Chester.   They normally take place mornings midweek, and he does love a bit of company.   He has a short list of often-available members, and if anyone is interested in joining him, please get in touch ([email protected]).

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
