Easy Countryside and Waterway Guided Walk ~ In Cheshire and Free.

This free guided walk is open to the general public, and suitable for beginners.   If you’re keeping fit and well and wish to come along and join us, we would love to see more guest visitors.   Please book your place for the walk, and perhaps for lunch, as soon as you are confident you will be available.

This circular walk is local for Chester walkers, and will be about 4.8 miles long, crossing over mixed farmland with a good mixture of stiles and bridges most of which are in fair order.  There are a few gates you will need to climb over where stiles are missing, so this is not a good walk for dogs.   Although no longer navigable, there is a long length of the river Gowy to enjoy, and a short length of the Shropshire Union Canal close to Ellesmere Port.  In summer the river bank path can be a bit overgrown so taking a walking stick may be helpful, (and some fields may have cows in them).   Suitable footwear will be boots due to the frequent absence of visible paths, and possible sections of muddy footpaths, especially if it has been recently raining.

There will be a ten-minute break about half-way round the walk for ‘bring your own’ refreshments and this walk will finish with an optional pub lunch.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
