Easy Countryside and Waterway Guided Walk ~ In Cheshire and Free.

This free guided walk is open to the general public, and suitable for beginners.   If you’re keeping fit and well and wish to come along and join us, we would love to see more guest visitors.   Please book your place for the walk as soon as you are confident you will be available.   Some walks will now be on Saturdays; see ‘Future Walks’ – down below for the details.

This is an excellent and popular circular river and countryside walk.   All of the paths are broad and firm making it a good all year round walk; although in winter the towpath can get a bit muddy and the first section from Hartford Bridge to the locks is a bit bumpy.   The first parts through the countryside are best in summer when the trees are in leaf, flowers are out, and there are lambs with the sheep in the meadows; but all of the paths are enclosed so dogs can’t worry them.   The good news is there are no stiles, narrow bridges or latched gates and it’s easy walking.   The longest part of this walk is along the wooded river bank towpath which you may have to share with cyclists and joggers.   The only hill is up from the river back to the village.

There will be a ten-minute break about half-way round the walk for ‘bring your own’ refreshments.

Details

The length of this walk.....

.....is only 4½ miles, and we won't walk too fast for you.

This walk is suitable for all adults having good mobility.   Excellent for friendly dogs, but hopeless for wheelchairs.   Suitable footwear will be anything stout and flat soled; but in winter boots or wellies will be the best.  If it has recently been raining heavily there is likely to be a lot of mud along the towpath.   Their are  toilets at the Lion pub just across the road from the start and finish.   They should be available at the end of the walk, but unlikely at the start.

Assemble at 10.15 am for a 10.30 start.    Finish about 2.00 pm.

Booking your place

To book, send an email to the walk’s organiser & guide – [email protected]

The café we were going to use for lunch has recently closed and there is no local alternative.

On the Thursday before the walk, everyone who has booked in will be sent a reminder, and also the details of where to park your car or moor your boat.

The deadline for booking a place just for the walk is Saturday 14th December at 9.00 pm. – the night before the walk.

A booking confirmation will be emailed to you.

Future Walks

FUTURE BRANCH WALKS: –

The results of a walking day availability poll showed 43 regular walkers may be able to attend Saturday walks, 13 would not, and 14 gave no opinion.   I have therefore decided to hold one autumn walk and one spring walk on a Saturday; this will include the walk next March and allow more local IWA branch members to join us as guests.

Entries for your diary; the remaining branch walks this season will therefore be the New Year walk on the 12th January; then 16th February; 16th March; 13th April; and the last walk of the season will be on 11th May.

NEW ROUTE SURVEYS: – Derek Smith, who organises these walks for the branch, frequently goes out to survey and record routes for new walks, currently between 5 and 10 miles from Chester.   They normally take place mornings midweek, and he does love a bit of company.   He has a short list of often-available members, and if anyone is interested in joining him, please get in touch ([email protected]).

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
