IWA Chester & Merseyside Branch is holding its latest monthly season of talks at the Ellesmere Port Boat Museum Café, CH65 4FW

Ray Buss (local historian) talks on the history of the 250 years old canal ~ which is still going strong.

Following on from the successful Chester 250th Anniversary Canal Festival, Ray brings the history up to date from where the Industrial Revolution in 18th and 19th century had a major impact on life and work across the country. Everyone wanted to be part of the new transport network, businesses in Chester included. The project got the ahead in 1772. This history of how the local waterways were planned, built and extended tell a story of the era and how important its heritage remains for canal users of today with Chester recently being awarded the first Inland Heritage Port within the UK by the Maritime Heritage Trust.

Please come along and support this event as it is free to members and non-members alike and will be a wealth of local Cheshire history.

We will have our fun raffle and sales of Christmas cards and Waterway’s 2023 Calendars will be available.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
