Fund Britain's Waterways - Future Events

Read about  the events and activities planned to continue promotion of the Fund Britain’s Waterways campaign.

In 2026 FBW will be pointing the main campaign cruise towards the north west, to highlight the concentration of major issues there.  Four routes are being planned to converge on Manchester and Liverpool in June-July.  More details will be available shortly.

Three other events are also being planned:

  • The first FBW event of 2026 will be a campaign cruise jointly organised with the Birmingham Canal Navigations Society over the weekend of 20/21 March. The Icicle Cruise to the Walsall Town Arm will celebrate the re-opening of the canal after the August 2024 pollution incident and sample the new CRT arrangements at Walsall Basin. Please email [email protected] for more information.
  • This year’s Canalway Cavalcade dispersal cruise from Little Venice after the first May Bank Holiday weekend is planned to be on the Thames tideway to Woolwich, in company with a flotilla of historic narrowboats. The aim will be to celebrate all the boats built by Harland & Wolff, since 2026 is the 90th anniversary of the fleet built in 1936. It will be one of the first occasions this number of boats has returned to the place they were built, and a momentous opportunity to celebrate the longevity and quality of the build work and the dedication of the owners to maintaining and restoring them.
  • Building on the enthusiasm generated by the River Cam campaign cruise, local organiser the Great Ouse Boating Association (GOBA) is making plans for a cruise on the River Great Ouse. The Great Ouse has recently become central to several planned major projects: the Universal Studios theme park near Bedford, the Fens Reservoir and the proposed new town at Tempsford. The aims of the cruise will be to highlight the many benefits provided by the river and draw attention to the lack of funding for the Environment Agency to maintain its infrastructure. The outline plan is to cruise to Bedford and be part of the Bedford River Festival on 18/19 July, stopping at towns and villages en route to engage with MPs, Mayors and councillors and draw attention to failing assets.

Fund Britain’s Waterways – Campaign Cruise 2025

The FBW Campaign Cruises for 2025 concluded with the boats that participated in the main Cruise having covered thousands of miles of the waterway network raising awareness of the benefits of our inland waterways and the threats to them from inadequate funding.  You can catch up with the activities by joining the Facebook group Fund Britain’s Waterways – Cruises for 2025

The first boats set off from Strawberry Island Boat Club, near Doncaster, on 29th March, and during April boats from across the UK travelled from their home locations to Little Venice, London to attend IWA’s Canalway Cavalcade over the bank holiday weekend of 3rd to 5th May.

Boats called at marinas or cruising clubs on route, where the local people organised events to which local politicians including MPs were invited.

The boats formed small convoys and moored together. The boats’ crews posted on social media as they progressed. The aim of the cruise has been to generate positive publicity for the FBW campaign getting local people and their political representatives involved.

Following IWA’s Canalway Cavalcade, a group of boats moved to Limehouse Basin and on Wednesday 7th May to cruise to the Palace of Westminster on a rising tide, arriving at the Palace from 10.30 a.m.  High Water Westminster Bridge was at 11.00 a.m.  After making our voices heard for a suitable length of time, boats headed downriver on the ebbing tide, passing Limehouse, for overnight moorings in West India Dock.

On Thursday 8th May, boats cruised from West India Dock to Brentford or Teddington. As water levels allowed, boats departed the Dock on a rising tide inbound for Brentford and Teddington. High Water Brentford and Teddington was at 1.00 p.m.  There was also an opportunity for boats to depart the tideway at Limehouse Lock.

Following the Cavalcade Dispersal cruise, individual boats cruised towards Boston to cross The Wash.  Those boats who exited the Thames at Brentford took the Grand Union Canal north to Braunston, then headed up to Huddlesford Junction and then along the Trent and Mersey Canal to Torksey Junction and down to Boston. On 25th June the flotilla of 13 narrowboats crossed the Wash to Wisbech, the largest group ever to make the crossing. Once boats reached Wisbech, some continued into the Middle Level Navigation and out to River Great Ouse and its tributaries.

Boats that chose to go up to Teddington then cruised the Thames to Oxford, followed the Oxford Canal up to Braunston, then the Grand Union Canal to Leicester, River Soar to join the rest of the group at Boston. Some boats took slightly different routes, but the idea was to use water in the care of as many different navigation authorities as possible.

The following week by week itinerary gives an indication of areas covered.  The Facebook page Fund Britain’s Waterways was updated each day.

Several boat club visits took place during the flotilla’s journey:
