In the cause of sustainable boating, many boats and boaters are moving away from fossil fuels, like diesel, gas and solid fuel, towards electricity, both to propel the boat and for domestic purposes.

One result of this is the increasing use of new technology batteries on boats, usually based on lithium chemistry. These may be installed in your boat or be part of portable appliances and devices brought on board.

Bowman Bradley, chair of the Sustainable Boating Group said “Whilst these new battery technologies bring much benefit, we are all becoming aware of the hazards that can result if they are damaged or used incorrectly. Many of these hazards exist whether we are afloat or onshore, but some are specific to boats and boaters. Whether you have realised it or not, you almost certainly have lithium chemistry batteries somewhere on your boat, even if only in your mobile phone, and, of course, the larger the battery the greater the potential hazard.
