Easy Countryside and Waterway Guided Walk ~ In Cheshire and Free.

This free guided walk is open to the general public, and suitable for beginners.   If you’re keeping fit and well and wish to come along and join us, we would love to see more guest visitors.   Please book your place for the walk as soon as you are confident you will be available.

The January walk was cancelled due to frozen slippery ground with dangerous icy stiles.   Hopefully the conditions for this easier walk will be better.   It’s an excellent all year round walk with well used paths for all of the circular route making it very easy walking.  The route will take you along the Trent & Mersey canal towpath to Barnton on the outward part then a short connecting road will bring us to Saltersford Locks on the River Weaver.   The return route is along the river towpath which is part of the North Cheshire Way, where a nice fresh breeze will blow along the open Weaver valley.   There are no stiles so the route is excellent for dogs.  There is one small towpath hill where horses were taken over Saltersford tunnel, otherwise the route is flat.

There will be a ten-minute break about half-way round the walk for ‘bring your own’ refreshments.

Details

The length of this walk.....

.....is only 4¼ miles, and we won't walk too fast for you.

This walk is suitable for all adults having good mobility.   Excellent for friendly dogs, okay for buggies, but difficult for wheelchairs.   Suitable footwear will be anything stout and flat soled; trainers will be fine but boots will be the best.  If it has recently been raining heavily there could be a few occasional muddy patches.  The pub toilets will be available at the finish of the walk; and hopefully at the start.

Assemble at 10.15 am for a 10.30 start.    Finish about 1.30 pm.

Booking your place

To book, send an email to the walk’s organiser & guide – [email protected]

If you are bringing a partner please let me know both your names; and if you wish to book a place for the pub lunch afterwards please also send me your order.  Places at the pub are limited so it’s best to make an early booking.   Here you can download the Sunday lunch menu: – View the Menu

On the Thursday before the walk, everyone who has booked in will be sent a reminder, and also the details of where to park your car or moor your boat.

The deadline for booking a place just for the walk is Saturday 15th February at 9.00 pm. – the night before the walk.

A booking confirmation will be emailed to you.

Future Walks

FUTURE BRANCH WALKS: – Entries for your diary; the remaining branch walks this season will be on Sat. 15th March; then on 13th April; and the last walk of the season will be on 11th May.

NEW ROUTE SURVEYS: – Derek Smith, who organises these walks for the branch, frequently goes out to survey and record routes for new walks, currently between 5 and 10 miles from Chester.   They normally take place mornings midweek, and he does love a bit of company.   He has a short list of often-available members, and if anyone is interested in joining him, please get in touch ([email protected]).

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
