Waterways of the Low Countries
A talk by John Pomfret.
When one thinks of the ‘Low Countries’, invariably visions of windmills, tulips, Amsterdam and its canals come to mind. Or more usually, just the Netherlands. But few include Belgium in the mix.
It was waterways that enabled trade and, consequently towns, that grew along their banks to thrive. There was Bruges, Gent, Groningen , to say nothing of Amsterdam. John will tell us of the early development of these waterways and the part the played in the history of the Low countries. A brief tour of the waterways will follow.
John will then turn to the developments of recent decades. There was the Waterway enlargements project, new waterways for freight use and the enclosing of the Zuider Zee and the Delta Project. And then the idea of leisure came along and with it, came restoration schemes for the recreational boater along the smaller waterways.
