London WRG weekend dig - Wey and Arun Canal
Back
Volunteers working on the Wey &Arun canal restoration

This is a weekend dig on the Wey and Arun Canal in Surrey.

This is a joint weekend dig with several other local groups. We will be working on the Wey & Arun canal in the Surrey/Sussex area.  The work usually involves scrub clearance and bonfires.  We’ll enjoy a Christmas party on the Saturday evening.

We welcome new volunteers! Sign up on the Facebook event or email [email protected] to book on.

Please contact us for a ticket, which is slightly more than a regular weekend dig.

How weekend digs work

You’ll join a friendly and experienced group of volunteers who work round the UK to restore canals and other waterways. We work on a range of tasks but this weekend is likely to involve mostly heavy gardening skills in a rural area of the Wey and Arun canal.

All training and safety equipment will be provided but you must provide your own steel toe cap footwear. You should have a good standard of fitness but we will work with you to accommodate any physical needs.

Accommodation
We will be staying in a village hall as a mixed group so you will need to bring: a mat or camp bed, a sleeping bag, sturdy clothes that can get muddy or torn, and steel toe cap footwear.

You can also join for the day if you prefer not to stay overnight.

Costs
Food will be provided and we can cater for dietary requirements (just tell us in advance).

Meals provided are cooked breakfast, sandwich lunch on site, and a dinner Saturday evening.

If you get a van lift from London Waterloo we ask for a contribution of up to £15 for fuel.

Timetable

Friday – van lift available from London Waterloo, or meet us at the village hall from about 7pm. Some members will visit the pub (this is optional). Please make your own arrangements for Friday dinner – most people bring sandwiches for their journey.

Saturday – Cooked breakfast 8am, we work onsite 9-5. We have sandwich lunch on site, then a cooked meal in the evening. Pub is again optional.

Sunday – Cooked breakfast 8am, sandwich lunch on site, we work onsite from 9am usually finishing by 4pm.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
