Countryside and Waterway Guided Walk ~ In Cheshire and Free.
This free guided walk is suitable for agile beginners, so if you’re keeping fit and well wish to come along and join us, we would love to see more guest visitors. Please book your place for the walk, and perhaps for lunch, as soon as you are confident you will be available.
This quite challenging circular walk will be about 5 miles long; the first half is along footpaths which are invisible and not often used. There are some delightful hot points such as the magnificent thatched cottage where the route includes the edge of their lawn, soon followed by an enchanting spinney. However, most of the route crosses simple rural landscapes and sometimes fields of crops. The twelve stiles are in good order, but take a walking stick, as we may come across the occasional cow. The waterway section follows a long length of the Llangollen Canal, and passes three locks where we may see a boat passing through.
There will be a ten-minute break half-way round the walk for ‘bring your own’ refreshments and this guided walk in the Barbridge countryside and along canal towpaths will finish with an optional pub lunch or drinks in the lounge.

The walk is suitable for older teenagers, senior citizens and anyone in-between. Suitable footwear will be boots or wellies due to rough meadows and fields of crops, which may be muddy if there has recently been rain. Only suitable for small dogs as the stiles are not dog friendly, and the only facilities are to be found in the pub at the start and finish of the walk.
Assemble at 10.15 am for a 10.30 start. Finish about 2.00 pm.
To book, send an email to the walk’s organiser & guide: – derek.smith@waterways.org.uk
If bringing a partner, please give both your names, and if you wish to book a place for the pub lunch afterwards please ask. Places are limited so it’s best to make an early booking. Here is a link to a scan of the menu, please let us know what to order for you. VIEW the MENU

FOR YOUR DIARY: – Other branch walks this year will be held on 12th March; 16th April; and the last walk of the season will be on 7th May.
NEW ROUTE SURVEYS: – Derek Smith, who organises these walks for the branch, frequently goes out to survey and record routes for new walks, currently between 5 and 10 miles from Chester. They normally take place mornings midweek, and he does love a bit of company. He has a short list of often-available members, and if anyone is interested in joining him, please get in touch (derek.smith@waterways.org.uk).
Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.
We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.
Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.
You can help Save Waterways Heritage.
