Easy Countryside and Waterway Guided Walk ~ In Cheshire and Free.

This free guided walk is open to the general public, and suitable for beginners.   If you’re keeping fit and well and wish to come along and join us, we would love to see more guest visitors.   Please book your place for the walk as soon as you are confident you will be available.

The outward part of this circular walk is along an excellent canal towpath, but the return route is more challenging. There’s a lot of variety in the scenery and the route includes many footpaths which are rarely used, some cut through rock. There are excellent views across the shallow valley, a long and wooded section, the Daresbury research labs and old ancient narrow stiles that are difficult to cross and will require some agility. Excellent for dogs, (but may need help with one of the stiles). You will have to cross two fields of crops and wade through a section of tall dense ferns. Also, there are some low hills to climb.

There will be a ten-minute break about half-way round the walk for ‘bring your own’ refreshments.

Details

The length of this walk.....

.....is only 4½ miles, and at a slow pace - so we won’t walk too fast for you.

This walk is suitable for all adults having good mobility. Good for friendly dogs, but hopeless for wheelchairs. Suitable footwear will be anything stout and flat soled; trainers will be fine but boots will be the best. If it has recently been raining heavily there could be a few occasional muddy patches. The pub toilets will be available at the finish of the walk; and hopefully at the start.

Assemble at 10.15 am for a 10.30 start.    Finish about 1.30 pm.

Booking your place

To book, send an email to Derek Smith, the walk’s organiser & guide:- ([email protected]).

If you are bringing a partner please let me know both your names, and if you wish to book a place for the pub lunch afterwards please ask.  Places at the pub are limited so it’s best to make an early booking.   You can view the menu here:- VIEW the MENU
(Scroll down and select the Sunday Roast menu).

On the Thursday before the walk, everyone who has booked in will be sent a reminder, and also the details of where to park your car.

The deadline for booking a place just for the walk is Saturday 18th October at 9.00 pm. – the night before the walk.

A booking confirmation will be emailed to you.

Assemble at 10.15 am for a 10.30 start.    Finish about 2.00 pm

Future Walks

FUTURE BRANCH WALKS: –  You may want to make a note of upcoming walks on your calendar or in your diary, so you don’t miss them?   The next walk will be Sat.15th November at Grappenhall; then the 14th of December Xmas walk will be at Higher Walton.

Most folk won’t have the calendar for next year yet so I’ll repeat then in December, but the dates will be: – New Year walk on 11th January at St. Helens; then 15th February at Middlewich; Sat.14th March at Barbridge; 12th April at Acton Bridge (Hope the pub don’t get the drinks bill mixed up again); and finally 10th of May at Stoke near Chester.

NEW ROUTE SURVEYS: – Derek Smith, who organises these walks for the branch, frequently goes out to survey and record routes for new walks, currently between 5 and 10 miles from Chester.   They normally take place mornings midweek, and he does love a bit of company.   He has a short list of often-available members, and if anyone is interested in joining him, please get in touch ([email protected]).

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
