“Shugborough and the Trent & Mersey Canal”. This is an easy 3 ½ mile walk with no stiles, on the towpath, on the pavement, and on footpaths.

Leaving the public house, we access the towpath and follow it in the direction of Little Haywood and Colwich as far as bridge 72. After crossing the river Sow at Weetman’s Bridge we walk alongside the river, soon entering the Shugborough Estate, where we follow public and permissive paths giving us access to some of the less-frequented parts and features of this large country house. We return via the medieval Essex bridge, and from there under an arch back to The Clifford Arms.

Meet 17:00 for a 17:15 start on Wednesday 7th June 2023 in the car park of The Clifford Arms, Main Road, Great Haywood, Staffs. ST18 0SR.

NB: Please reserve a place on this walk with Clive, especially if you wish to eat afterwards at The Clifford Arms. This is because they only have limited availability for diners. In order to assist their catering, we will place our orders for food before we set off on the walk.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
