Ian Moore, Chairman of the Basingstoke Canal Society, will talk about its restoration.
The canal was constructed by John Pinkerton under the direction of William Jessop and was opened in 1794. It mostly remained navigable until loss of trade and lack of maintenance after the first world war closed the upper reaches. Alex Harmsworth (pictured left) unsuccessfully attempted to navigate from the Wey to Basingstoke in 1931. | |
Following the formation of the Surrey and Hampshire Canal Society the canal was compulsorily purchased by the two county councils and restoration started in 1975. It was re-opened to Odiham (pictured left with trip boat) in 1991. Basingstoke is still unconnected as bats occupy Greywell Tunnel. |
Tea and coffee are served at all IWA Kent & East Sussex evening events. Entry is free with a raffle to cover costs.
All IWA Kent & East Sussex Branch events are open to non-members and you are encouraged to bring friends. Similarly, if you know of any local society that might be interested then please do let them know.
