Canal & River Trust - our blue and green corridors for nature - IWA Manchester Branch Meeting
Back

Come join us for this month’s Open Meeting on Monday 9th March, at 7.15pm in the Castlefield Hotel.

Our waterways provide an incredibly important natural corridor. Bringing the countryside into the heart of our busiest cities and linking fragmented wildlife communities together, our canals, rivers and reservoirs are some of the most bio-diverse spaces in the country.

Ryan Gordon is an Ecologist at the Canal & River Trust, based in the North West.

Ryan holds a Masters in Conservation Management from Edge Hill University, joining after completing his student placement with the Trust in 2025.

He has a strong passion for nature and the outdoors, spending time as an Outdoor Education Instructor and valuing the importance of citizen science, and engaging with people about ecology and the natural world.

We will start gathering 7.15pm at the Castlefield Hotel on Liverpool Road, Manchester M3 4JR for 7.30pm start in one of the ground floor conference rooms. The entrance to the hotel is on the side facing towards Deansgate overlooking the Castlefield outdoor arena. The talk is free to attend and everyone is welcome. You don’t have to be an IWA member, however, we do appreciate a small donation to help defray the costs of hiring the room.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
