Colin Harvey will talk and present screenings.

A new, delayed timeline has been set for safety works on a shipwreck full of explosives after a new survey detected 18 “unexploded shells and ordnance” (UXO) around it.
The SS Richard Montgomery foundered on a sandbank along the Thames Estuary in 1944, eventually sinking with an estimated 1,400 tonnes of explosive cargo on board.
Decades later, a government proposal to remove the masts on the vessel in case they fell, with the potential of causing a severe explosion with devastating effects on Sheppey, Grain, & Southend in the Thames and Medway Estuaries, has been halted.

Tea and coffee are served at all IWA Kent & East Sussex evening events. Entry is free with a raffle to cover costs.

All IWA Kent & East Sussex Branch events are open to non-members and you are encouraged to bring friends. Similarly, if you know of any local society that might be interested then please do let them know.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
