An illustrated talk by Jeremy Bratch

Jeremy has been a guest speaker at Branch meetings since April 2011. Such is the excellence of his presentations and the graphics that accompany them. This will be his 13th visit to Chiltern Branch.

This time, his talk takes us on to blue waters as opposed to still, and traces a century of changes in leisure boating and marine technology. Jeremy is on the staff of the Cruising Association, an organisation founded in 1908; his talk will trace the history of cruising and the Cruising Association over the past 115 years against the background of developments that have taken place. Intriguingly, his talk includes an explanation of how an ice cream became a Cruising Association members’ curse or just maybe a blessing and how the most valuable cargo the UK ever sent to America is aboard many boats and is in all our homes.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
