canal lock opening onto a river

Jim Doran wil give a talk entitled “A Walk through History along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal”.

In his talk, Jim will walk us in pictures along the canal between Wigan and Liverpool including the Rufford Branch, whilst exploring the historical links of villages to the canal.

The talk is free to attend but a donation to help cover the cost of the rent of the room and speaker’s expenses will be appreciated.

The talk will be followed by a brief Annual General Meeting of the Branch during which members of the branch can participate and visitors are welcome to stay if they wish to learn more about the Branch activities. The AGM will include brief reports and will confirm the membership of the Branch Committee. We are keen to get members involved in the Committee. You can offer fresh ideas, help us to track what’s happening around our canals, help to organise things, almost anything! We aren’t asking anything arduous or time consuming and you will be able to find out more about the canals that we all love. IWA membership is desired but not essential as you can also be co-opted as a Committee member. If you have any questions about the available roles, please do not hesitate to contact Phil: [email protected]

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
