Restored canals can act as a trigger for regeneration. They attract visitors and investment to the area. Businesses enjoy the new waterside developments and jobs are created. Flat paths alongside the re-built canals offer perfect leisure activity conditions for walking, jogging and fishing and the waterways instil a renewed feeling of pride and community amongst the local population.

Canal Camp Working Holidays

Every year IWA’s Waterway Recovery Group offers a programme of week-long working holiday Canal Camps and weekend digs organised by regional groups at waterway restoration sites throughout England and Wales.

Volunteers will be carrying out bridge repairs, lock restoration, channel excavation and brickwork.  We expect to not only bring significant support to each of the waterways we visit, but also to give our volunteers the opportunity to learn new heritage and construction skills.
