Fishing in the Archive

IWA’s photographic archive contains a wide variety of subjects.  Here is a look at angling and other fishy things from years gone by.

Fishing Match

This fishing match took place somewhere we don’t recognise.  Do you know where it is?  If so, please send let us know (to [email protected])

Fishing Match

Another fishing match at an unknown location.  It looks a popular spot with anglers.  Do you know where it is?

Fishing on the Macclesfield Canal

This looks a peaceful spot, and maybe the angler has caught something?

Fishing on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal

The atmospheric use of light and shadow in this photo shows the photographer knew what he was up to when he took this one.

This photo was taken in the 1980s at Rye on the River Rother, one of the few ports in England managed by the Environment Agency.

Fishing Boats on the Crinan Canal

This 1970 photo shows fishing boats at Ardrishaig at the southern end of the Crinan Canal.  Nowadays, you are likely to see pleasure boats moored up here.

Transiting the Caledonian Canal

This photo, taken in 1980, shows the fishing vessel Vernal entering a lock at Fort Augustus on the Caledonian Canal.  The waterway was a popular transit for fishing vessels to get the from east coast of Scotland to the west coast and vice versa. The road bridge, on the right hand side of the photo, has been swung open to allow the boat to enter the lock.

Fishing at Slaithwaite

This photo, taken part way through the restoration of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal shows a dramatic background; and again the photographer clearly knew what he was doing here.   The photo almost has cinematic quality, with the composition drawing attention to the solitary figure of the angler.

Eaten Alive

How this one got into IWA’s photo archive we don’t know, but it shows a British Grass Snake swallowing a fish – not something you see every day!
