IWA Chester & Merseyside Walk
Back

Easy Countryside and Waterway Guided Walk ~ In Cheshire and Free.

This free guided walk is open to the general public, and suitable for beginners.   If you’re keeping fit and well and wish to come along and join us, we would love to see more guest visitors.   Please book your place for the walk as soon as you are confident you will be available.

An excellent circular walk with a wide variety of good views. The beach is great for summer walking alongside the River Dee estuary, and it even includes a short section of the famous Wirral Way.  Most of the route is fairly flat, but there is a short and steep section on rustic steps to start your climb up the steep slope out of the dungeon past the only natural waterfall in the Wirral.   (A dungeon is a local word for a steep sided wooded valley).   The majority of the footpaths are well used and unlikely to get muddy except for a few patches through the wood.   There are no stiles and the kissing gates are in good order so it’s also a great walk for dogs.

There will be a ten-minute break about half-way round the walk for ‘bring your own’ refreshments.

Details

The length of this walk.....

.....is only 4 miles, and at a slow pace - so we won’t walk too fast for you.

This walk is suitable for all adults having good mobility.   Excellent for friendly dogs, but hopeless for wheelchairs.   Suitable footwear will be anything stout and flat soled; trainers will be fine but boots will be the best.  If it has recently been raining heavily there could be a few occasional muddy patches.  The pub toilets will be available at the finish of the walk; and hopefully at the start.

Assemble at 10.15 am for a 10.30 start.    Finish about 1.15 pm.

Booking your place

To book, you will need to text ‘I would like to join the walk’ to the walk’s organiser & guide: – Derek Smith – 07500 300 347 – and I will phone you back.   If you are bringing a partner I will need to know both your names.   Also your email address, so I can send your booking confirmation, and later the details of the parking arrangements.   At the same time, if you wish to book a place for the pub lunch afterwards please ask.  Places at the pub are limited so it’s best to make an early booking.

NEW ROUTE SURVEYS: – Derek Smith, who organises these walks for the branch, frequently goes out to survey and record routes for new walks, currently between 5 and 10 miles from Chester.   They normally take place mornings midweek, and he does love a bit of company.    If anyone is interested in joining him, please get in touch; text or phone 07500 300347

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
