IWA Chester & Merseyside Walk
Back

Easy Countryside and Waterway Guided Walk ~ In Cheshire and Free.

This free guided walk is open to the general public, and suitable for beginners.   If you’re keeping fit and well and wish to come along and join us, we would love to see more guest visitors.   Please book your place for the walk as soon as you are confident you will be available.

This is such a delightful and easy circular walk it’s almost a long and gentle stroll.   All of the paths are good and most of them quite wide and you see quite long lengths of two waterways.   There are a couple of bridal gates and one stile and the route is so well used and signed we won’t get lost at all.    Apart from a short section of farm drive there are no roads included in the route.   The short path through a small wood has a narrow and winding path and the continuous gentle slope up to the canal from the river has no steep sections at all.   There’s one short meadow to cross – giving excellent views along the valley, the grass is short and there are no animals.   Almost all of the return route is along the canal.

There will be a ten-minute break about half-way round the walk for ‘bring your own’ refreshments.

Details

The length of this walk.....

.....is only 4.25 miles, and at a slow pace - so we won’t walk too fast for you.

This walk is suitable for all adults having good mobility and is excellent for dogs.   Excellent for friendly dogs, but hopeless for wheelchairs.   Suitable footwear will be anything flat soled; trainers will be fine but boots will be the best.  If it has recently been raining heavily there could be a few occasional muddy patches.  The pub toilets will be available at the finish of the walk; and hopefully at the start

Assemble at 10.15 am for a 10.30 start.    Finish about 1.45 pm.

Booking your place

To book, you will need to phone or text the walk’s organiser & guide: – Derek Smith – 07500 300 347 – mornings is best – and do not leave any voicemails.   If you are bringing a partner please let me know both your names, and your email address so I can send your booking confirmation and details of the parking arrangements.   At the same time, if you wish to book a place for the pub lunch afterwards please ask.  Places at the pub are limited so it’s best to make an early booking.   Here you can download the Sunday lunch menu: –  View the Menu.

Future Walks

FUTURE BRANCH WALKS: –  You may want to make a note of the next and last walk of this season on your calendar or in your diary, so you don’t miss it?  We will be walking it on 10th May at Stoke near Chester.

NEW ROUTE SURVEYS: – Derek Smith, who organises these walks for the branch, frequently goes out to survey and record routes for new walks, currently between 5 and 10 miles from Chester.   They normally take place mornings midweek, and he does love a bit of company.   He has a short list of often-available members, and if anyone is interested in joining him, please get in touch ([email protected]).

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
