IWA Chester & Merseyside Walk
Back

Easy Countryside and Waterway Guided Walk ~ In Cheshire and Free.

This free guided walk is open to the general public, and suitable for beginners.   If you’re keeping fit and well and wish to come along and join us, we would love to see more guest visitors.   Please book your place for the walk as soon as you are confident you will be available.

I hope that you are keeping well as we are looking forwards so much to meeting you.   We only had 22 walkers attending the last walk and the additional IWA guests who insisted on a Saturday walk were also absent, so henceforth only Sunday walks will be organised.  If you wish to come on this Christmas walk Santa hats are optional.

Starting with a delightful wooded cutting, the walk begins with a short length of the Bridgwater Canal, just as far as the next bridge, then over a footbridge into the very popular Walton Hall public park.   All the footpaths are in excellent condition and there are no stiles and only a few kissing gates.   After the park we will find the start of an ancient footpath taking us through a golf course.   Following a buggy path which is also part of the Delamere Way, we join a footpath up the slope and through Hill Cliffe woods.   We are then taken downhill through the estate along an enchanting and enclosed old urban footpath to London Bridge.   A long towpath walk then brings us back to the pub.

There will be a ten-minute break about half-way round the walk for ‘bring your own’ refreshments.

Details

The length of this walk.....

.....is only 4.25 miles, and at a slow pace - so we won’t walk too fast for you.

This walk is suitable for all adults having good mobility.   Excellent for friendly dogs, possible for buggies but difficult for wheelchairs.   Suitable footwear will be anything stout and flat soled; trainers will be fine.  If it has recently been raining heavily there could be a few occasional muddy patches.  The pub toilets will be available at the finish of the walk; and hopefully at the start.

Assemble at 10.15 am for a 10.30 start.    Finish about 1.45 pm.

Booking your place

To book, send an email to Derek Smith, the walk’s organiser & guide:- ([email protected]).

If you are bringing a partner please let me know both your names, and if you wish to book a place for the pub lunch afterwards please ask.  Places at the pub are limited so it’s best to make an early booking.

Booking your lunch: – You can view the menu here: – VIEW the MENU       (It’s an Italian Pesto Restaurant so for an average size meal choose 3 dishes).

On the Thursday before the walk, everyone who has booked in will be sent a reminder, and also the details of where to park your car.

The deadline for booking a place just for the walk is Saturday 13th December at 9.00 pm. – the night before the walk.

A booking confirmation will be emailed to you.

Future Walks

FUTURE BRANCH WALKS: –  You may want to make a note of upcoming walks on your calendar or in your diary, so you don’t miss them?   The dates for next year will be: – New Year walk on 11th January at St. Helens; then 15th February at Middlewich; 15th March at Barbridge; 12th April at Acton Bridge, and finally 10th of May at Stoke near Chester.

NEW ROUTE SURVEYS: – Derek Smith, who organises these walks for the branch, frequently goes out to survey and record routes for new walks, currently between 5 and 10 miles from Chester.   They normally take place mornings midweek, and he does love a bit of company.   He has a short list of often-available members, and if anyone is interested in joining him, please get in touch ([email protected]).

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
