Sir Peter Scott and IWA - IWA Manchester Branch Meeting
Back

Come join us for this month’s Open Meeting on Monday 14th April, at 7.15 pm in the Castlefield Hotel.

Our final talk of the season “My Illustrious Namesake And the IWA…” by Peter Scott will be held on 14 April.

That’s a famous name … ” said Mrs Wallbank to a 5-year-old Peter Scott in 1955. He was one of those moving figures on their 9″ Bush television, mainly talking about animals: but Peter’s classmates without televisions didn’t understand. And Peter didn’t understand, then, his namesake’s active involvement in the waterways was mostly over. And that was just a small part of his achievements.

Our speaker, Peter Scott, was IWA North East & Yorkshire Region Chairman and an IWA trustee from 2009 to 2019. He has about half-a-million photos, mainly of canals and many shelves with waterway books and magazines. He’s still boating (since 1971) so far totting up 616 trips; 3256 days afloat; 43,477 miles 30,654 locks. Mainly since 1992 aboard CopperkinsII, a 58′ modern-ish narrowboat, and Fulbourne – a 71′ GUCCC ex-working boat restored externally to working condition. He is a retired computist & enjoys bellringing on church and handbells, when not boating.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
