Waterways hidden heritage

Uncover your local waterways hidden heritage

We are campaigning for better protection of waterways heritage. As a part of this, we want you to investigate your local canal or river in more detail than perhaps ever before.

Larger structures such as bridges, locks, aqueducts and tunnels are more likely to be protected but smaller features can sometimes be missed. These features, although small, are no less important to the history of waterways.

Waterways hidden heritage can be things like the rope marks on a bridge, mason’s marks on a lock wall, canal company signage or mile posts along the towpath.

Share your photos with us

Can you spot any small or forgotten historic features on your local waterways?

If it looks interesting, share a photo of it with us at [email protected]. One of our resident heritage experts will try and identify the feature and we will add it here.

Please include the exact location, ideally using the ‘what3words’ app. If you could take a close up picture of the feature and also a photo of the overall setting, that will help with the identification. Please also grant permission for IWA to use your photographs.
