Join us for an evening with John Pomfret about his visits to the Danube.

Originally booked for the 2019/2020 programme, our venture abroad this year takes us to the Danube, the second longest river in Europe after the Volga and flowing for 1,785 miles from Germany to the Ukraine and the Black Sea.

Based on a number of visits, some by boat, John will take us down the Danube for 700 miles from the Wachau, upstream of Vienna, through Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia and Serbia. The tour ends with a passage through the spectacular Irongate Gorges and locks into Romania and Bulgaria. The Danube is a waterway steeped in history and music too, though it is not blue as one famous composer would have us believe. It offers castles and fortresses, four capital cities, magnificent scenery and river craft ranging from the humble canoe up to 14,000 ton barge tows. In 1991 it was designated a UNESCO Heritage Site. Quite some waterway, which John will describe with his illustrated presentation.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
