Region Committees

What is a region committee?

IWA regions are groups of branches that work together with a shared interest in waterways in a particular geographical area. The region furthers IWA’s objectives locally – focussing on the strategic level discussions and networking with waterways stakeholders at forums and through partnerships, for the benefit of the waterways in the region. The regions work together at a national level as a network to support delivery of IWA’s objectives, provide strategic overview, establish and share good practice across branches and ensure the voice of the membership is heard.

Every region is different, reflecting the individual branch committees, surrounding community and waterway users, members and individual strengths and time availability of its volunteers.

What does a region committee do?

The region committee acts on behalf of IWA and this carries some responsibility. The region committee is responsible for:

  • Implementing IWA’s policies within region activities
  • Monitoring implementation of IWA’s policies across all branches in the region (includes health and safety, safeguarding, data protection)
  • Supporting branch chairs, providing a space for peer support, with the region chairs present for a national perspective
  • Coordinating the voice of the region as a channel for escalating any ideas, feedback or  issues that are beyond the scope of one branch
  • Liaising internally with staff and also with other committees, as appropriate
  • Connecting externally with third parties to monitor and address the needs of the waterways in the region
