WRG North West weekend dig - Uttoxeter Canal
Back

We’ll be doing some undergrowth clearance around bridge 70 and scrub bashing on two other sites supporting restoration of the Uttoxeter Canal.

Accommodation is booked at a local school for Friday and Saturday nights (work on Saturdays and Sundays).  Day visitors welcome.

Our working day starts at 9am and ends by around 4pm.  On the Sunday we typically have a late lunch back at the accommodation and depart from there.

We welcome new volunteers! Email [email protected] to book on.

How weekend digs work

You’ll join a friendly and experienced group of volunteers who work round the UK to restore canals and other waterways. We work on a range of tasks but this weekend is likely to involve mostly heavy gardening skills in a rural area of the Uttoxeter Canal.

All training and safety equipment will be provided but you must provide your own steel toe cap footwear. You should have a good standard of fitness but we will work with you to accommodate any physical needs.

Accommodation
We will be staying in a local school as a mixed group so you will need to bring: a mat or camp bed, a sleeping bag, sturdy clothes that can get muddy or torn, and steel toe cap footwear.

You can also join for the day if you prefer not to stay overnight.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
