We will be hearing from John Pomfret about different boat lifts around the world and then some of the waterways of Poland.

Our Tuesday evening social for April will be an interesting insight into the canals of Poland. Our very own John Pomfret will give a talk via webinar.

He will introduce us to the many types of boat lift, old and new, around the world. Then followed by a tour of waterways in north east Poland to find the unique boat lifts of the Elbląg Kanał. We will start in the historic Hansa League port of Gdańsk, journey by boat across the delta of the Wisła river and around the Żuławy loop. Finishing with navigating us through the boat lifts of the Elbląg Kanał to reach the Masurian Lake District.

These waterways are becoming popular in Poland for boating holidays, with many hire boats available, and the talk will include some advice on boating in the area.

It’s easy to join using a phone, tablet or computer.

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
