Back

Join our guided Winter Walk and Social Lunch at Llanymynech on Saturday, 4 January 2025 as we explore the Montgomery Canal Restoration – Past, Present and Future.

In the morning we’ll take an easy three-mile walk beside the canal to visit Carreghofa Locks (already restored), Walls and Williams Bridges (to be rebuilt) and Vyrnwy Aqueduct (to be repaired).

Our social lunch will be in a private dining room at the Dolphin Inn, Llanymynech. Pre-booking and payment are required.

After lunch we’ll offer a visit to the present Shropshire Union Canal Society restoration site at Crickheath and walk along the towpath to the recently rebuilt Schoolhouse Bridge. The total distance, including the return to our vehicles, is approximately one mile and includes two stiles in each direction.

Towpaths may be uneven and are likely to be wet or muddy.

Numbers are limited for the walk and for our group lunch and places must be booked in advance, so to avoid disappointment we suggest you make your reservations as soon as possible and at the latest by Monday, 30 December 2024.

For bookings and further information on timings, lunch menu options and payments please email [email protected].

Waterway underfunding

Hundreds of miles of waterways – along with their unique heritage and habitats – are currently starved of funding and rely on constant lobbying by us to safeguard their future.

Sustainable Boating

We want boating on canals and rivers to be more sustainable and – even though the current overall contribution to UK carbon emissions is very small – we want to help reduce emissions on the waterways.

Waterways Heritage at Risk

Britain’s canals and rivers are a unique, living heritage. But that heritage is at risk – from urban development, lack of protection, loss of skills and knowledge and climate change.

You can help Save Waterways Heritage.

Waterway restoration

Restoring the UK’s blue infrastructure – our inherited network of navigable canals and rivers – is good for people and places.
