This is a weekend dig on the Shrewsbury and Newport Canal in Shropshire. The work usually involves scrub clearance, bonfires, and tree stump removal. There may be chainsaw teams working.
We welcome new volunteers! Sign up on the Facebook event or email [email protected] to book on.
How weekend digs work
You’ll join a friendly and experienced group of volunteers who work round the UK to restore canals and other waterways. We work on a range of tasks but this weekend is likely to involve mostly heavy gardening skills in a semi-rural area of the Shrewsbury and Newport canal.
All training and safety equipment will be provided but you must provide your own steel toe cap footwear. You should have a good standard of fitness but we will work with you to accommodate any physical needs.
Accommodation
We will be staying in a village hall as a mixed group so you will need to bring: a mat or camp bed, a sleeping bag, sturdy clothes that can get muddy or torn, and steel toe cap footwear.
You can also join for the day if you prefer not to stay overnight.
Campervans and tents are also welcome at this accommodation.
Costs
Food will be provided and we can cater for dietary requirements (just tell us in advance).
Food is £15 including cooked breakfast, sandwich lunch on site, and a dinner Saturday evening.
If you get a van lift from London Waterloo we ask for a contribution of up to £15 for fuel.
Timetable
Friday – van lift available from London Waterloo, or meet us at the village hall from about 7pm. Some members will visit the pub (this is optional). Please make your own arrangements for Friday dinner – most people bring sandwiches for their journey.
Saturday – Cooked breakfast 8am, we work onsite 9-5. We have sandwich lunch on site, then a cooked meal in the evening. Pub is again optional.
Sunday – Cooked breakfast 8am, sandwich lunch on site, we work onsite from 9am usually finishing by 4pm.
